Breath hydrogen (closed circles) and methane (open circles) were measured in parts per million at time 0 and then at 15 minutes intervals for 2 hours. After the fasting breath value at time 0, the subject was given 25 grams of glucose to drink. This graph shows a typical rise in breath hydrogen in a subject with two peaks: the first peak is consistent with upper gut bacterial overgrowth and the second peak is consistent with glucose malabsorption.
